Football Clubs in Germany

At the end of 2018, FIFA (The Fédération Internationale de Football Association) published a report indicating that on average more than 190 million people watched each football game. Overall, more than 1.2 billion people watched the final competition live. However, the World Cup only occurs every four years. Many of the football fans have clubs they follow and support that regularly play during the season. There are more than 26,000 football clubs in Germany. The league system separated them into different divisions based on their performance.

Ultras ≠ Hooligans

There are various types of fans in German football culture. Since the subgroups inside the fan population overlap with each other, it could be confusing in terms of the similarities and differences between Ultras and Hooligans. One of the most distinctive characteristics of Hooligans is that their behaviors are violence-driven. While Ultras value their love and passion towards clubs more than anything else.

Football and its Cultural Products

Over the years, many cultural products were created within the realm of football fans. Music is a great example. Some songs that are associated with football fans are world famous, such as “You will never walk alone,” “Three lions,” etc.. Most clubs have their own songs that fans often sing when they visit the game. Hooligan groups also have their preferred band who performs certain musics that the hooligans are most connected to.
