Germany finished the qualification stage with 7 points: two wins (4-0 Portugal, 1-0 United States) and one draw (2-2 Ghana). They knocked out Algeria with the difference of one goal (2-1). In the quarter-finals they outperformed France (1-0) and came to the semi-final stage where they played against Brazil, previous five-time World Cup winner. The game ended in an unexpected way where Brazil lost to Germany 1-7. In the final, Germany defeated Argentina for the fourth time in the past 14 years during the World Cup knockout stage (1-0).

Coach Löw recruited a very similar team as four years prior. From the map, we can see the state North Rhine-Westphalia contributed a lot of good football players who eventually were selected to perform on the international stage. Both Mesut Özil and Manuel Neuer come from Gelsenkirchen. Julian Draxler grew up in Gladbeck, Kevin Großkreutz in Dortmund, and Mats Hummels in Bergisch Gladbach. Shkodran Mustafi was born in Bad Hersfeld, Hesse, to an Albanian family originally from Gostivar, Macedonia. The 2014 team consisted of at least six players with multicultural backgrounds and they won the World Cup for the first time after reunification. The cooperation they presented on the pitch earned compliments from all over the world. Fans today still talk about the huge win they had against Brazil!
