The is the first time that the newly reunified German national team participated in the FIFA World Cup.
Just like last World Cup, the German national team performed well during the qualification stage. They had two wins (1-0 Bolivia and 3-2 South Korea) and one draw (1-1 Spain). During the knockout stage, Germany beat Belgium 3-2, but lost to Bulgaria in the Quarter-finals game (1-2). Lothar Matthäus scored a penalty kick during the game against Bulgaria but their opponent came back to win the game.
Most of the players on the German national football team are from the former West Germany. However, from the map, we do see at least two players from the former east side, Ulf Firsten from Riesa and Matthias Sammer from Dresden.
